The LM3150 SIMPLE SWITCHER
® Controller is an easy to use and simplified step down power controller capable of providing up to 12A of output current in
a typical application. Operating with an input voltage range of 6V-42V, the LM3150 features an adjustable output voltage down
to 0.6V. The switching frequency is adjustable up to 1 MHz and the synchronous architecture provides for highly efficient
designs. The LM3150 controller employs a Constant On-Time (COT) architecture with a proprietary Emulated Ripple Mode (ERM)
control that allows for the use of low ESR output capacitors, which reduces overall solution size and output voltage ripple.
The Constant On-Time (COT) regulation architecture allows for fast transient response and requires no loop compensation, which
reduces external component count and reduces design complexity.
Fault protection features such as thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout, over-voltage protection, short-circuit protection,
current limit, and output voltage pre-bias startup allow for a reliable and robust solution.
The LM3150 SIMPLE SWITCHER
® concept provides for an easy to use complete design using a minimum number of external components and National’s WEBENCH
® online design tool. WEBENCH
® provides design support for every step of the design process and includes features such as external component calculation
with a new MOSFET selector, electrical simulation, thermal simulation, and Build-It boards for prototyping.
The LM3150 evaluation boards are designed to provide the design engineer with a fully functional power converter based on Constant On-Time with Emulated Ripple mode control to evaluate the LM3150 and the entire LM315x family of parts. The evaluation board is preconfigured to use the LM3150 with the output voltage adjusted to 3.3V, with a typical max load current of 10A. This board is configured for 250 kHz. The printed circuit board consists of 4 layers of FR4 material and the top and bottom layers using 2 once copper and the inner layers using 1 once copper. The board size is 2.9” X 2.9”.
The evaluation board allows for a variety of configurations, and this multifunctional capability is used to also accept the fixed ouput versions of the LM3150 such as the LM3151-3.3, LM3152-3.3, and LM3153-3.3.

The LM3152-3.3 demonstration board is a part of the PowerWise® family of SIMPLE SWITCHER® Controllers. It has been designed to balance solution size and performance. The Constant-On-Time (COT) Emulated Ripple Mode (ERM) Control allows for the use of low ESR output capacitors and therefore decreases the output voltage ripple while maintaining a fast transient response. There is no loop compensation required for the COT architecture , as there is in voltage-mode and current mode control architectures, which helps to facilitate the ease of design and fast transient response. The demoboard uses a 2-layer , 2 ounce copper PCB with all of the components mounted on the top side. The LM3152-3.3 IC has a fixed output voltage of 3.3V and will operate over the input voltage range of 6V to 24V at 10A load current.
