May 28, 2002 - Samsung Electronics and National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) are working together to migrate their current electronic data interchange (EDI) business process to the RosettaNet standards, which are rapidly becoming the dominant standard for transacting business on the Internet.
"This challenging transition is the first real move National Semiconductor has undertaken with its OEM customer base to change from traditional EDI processes to the new approach established by the introduction of the RosettaNet standards," said Mike Glynn, IS Director of Business Applications for National. RosettaNet is a non-profit consortium of more than 400 leading technology companies dedicated to the development and deployment of standard electronic commerce interfaces that align the processes between supply chain partners on a global basis for increased efficiency and reliability.
National and Samsung initiated the RosettaNet project in August 2001 with a team approach to implement the complete set of RosettaNet PIPs (partner interface processes) which are the detailed procedures that assure various business operations conform to RosettaNet's global standards. The PIPs currently being developed between National and Samsung support the functions of Order Management, Collaborative Forecasting and Invoicing for one division of Samsung. Once these processes are up and running with that division, the team will move on to the next Samsung division until all business processes between National and Samsung are fully converted to RosettaNet standards. So far the team has implemented 6 PIPs, with two more to be implemented in the first half of calendar 2002.
"The implementation of the RosettaNet series of PIPs with Samsung represents the first real step of any major company to move forward with this standard on an enterprise basis," Glynn said. "The focus on moving the whole business process between two trading partners to RosettaNet will allow both companies to leverage the full benefits of the RosettaNet standard as it progresses," he added. "National Semiconductor is in the process of working with other supply chain partners to automate existing manual processes using RosettaNet. We look forward to working with other OEM customers that wish to leverage RosettaNet to improve their processes in conducting business with National."
