National Semiconductor Integrates Speaker and Headphone Amplifiers to Create Single-Chip Audio Solution for Portable Devices

June 3, 2002 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM), powering best-in-class technology, packaging and performance for next-generation audio products, today announced the LM4854, an integrated Boomer? stereo headphone amplifier and mono speaker amplifier ideally suited for small portable electronics such as cellular phones, PDAs and notebook computers.

"National Semiconductor is responding to the needs of the market by integrating more and more audio components into smaller packages," said Steve Kaufman, marketing manager for National Semiconductor?s audio products group. "What used to be a two-chip solution is now a single-chip solution.  The single-chip LM4854 saves our customers both component and board space costs."

The LM4854 integrates a 1.9W mono speaker amplifier and an 85mW stereo headphone amplifier for use in 3V and 5V systems requiring a mono speaker output and a headphone output.  This device has a fast 0.1ms turn-on and turn-off time.  Switching from mono BTL to an SE headphone configuration is accomplished using a headphone sense pin.

National?s LM4854 features advanced pop and click suppression circuitry for quieter turn-on and turn-off.  This device also eliminates output coupling capacitors, saving component count and board space.  Other features include an active-low micropower shutdown mode, an "instant-on" low-power standby mode, and thermal shutdown protection circuitry.

Pricing and Availability
The LM4854
is available now in 12-bump micro SMD, 14-pin LLP and 14-pin TSSOP packaging, and is priced at $1.10 in 1,000-unit quantities.  For more information on the LM4854, visit http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM4854.html.  For more information on National?s audio products, visit http://www.national.com/appinfo/audio/.  To view a high-resolution downloadable photo of the LM4854, visit http://www.national.com/company/pressroom/gallery/audio.html.
