National Semiconductor Announces Industry's First Low Dropout Regulators for the Emerging 42-Volt Automotive Market

National's LM2936HV Family Offers 5.0, 3.3 or 3.0-Volt Outputs and Ultra-Low Quiescent Current for New 42Volt Automotive Systems that will Cut Vehicle Weight and Emissions, Improve Reliability, and Reduce Costs

February 19, 2002-National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) today announced the latest additions to its low dropout (LDO) family of regulators with the introduction of the LM2936HV aimed at automotive applications. The LM2936HV is the industry's first product on the market that meets the stringent demands of the automotive industry and supports the new 42-volt standard now being adopted by automakers. The 42-volt standard will enable carmakers to replace mechanical and hydraulic systems with electrical systems to create cars that are lighter, more reliable, and produce fewer emissions.

National's LM2936HV is designed for use in new automotive applications such as integrated starter/alternator, electronic "drive-by-wire" steering, advanced braking, and other cutting-edge technologies that are expected to begin hitting the market with the 2005 model year.

"National's new LM2936HV continues our longstanding support of the automotive market while meeting automakers' needs for high-voltage semiconductors that are key to delivering the next generation of automotive solutions,." said Paul Wakefield, director of marketing, Enhanced Solutions Group. "Our focus is to bring standard products, such as the LM2936HV, to the market which supports today's needs as well as automakers future plans for cars that are safer, cleaner, and more fuel efficient."

Designed to meet the needs of tomorrow's high-voltage automotive applications, the LM2936HV supports continuous input voltages up to 60 volts with a 50 milliamp output. It features an ultra-low quiescent current (9( Amps, typical) that is ideal for sleep mode and other "keep alive" applications that demand constant power without placing excessive drain on the battery.

The LM2936HV is available today in the small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) package and a 5-volt output. Variations of the product at 3 and 3.3 volts will be available shortly.  Also coming are an on-off pin with an operating range from 2 to 60 volts for "stand by" applications and power packages for enhanced heat dissipation.

Pricing and Availability
The product is priced at 0.86 each in quantities of 1000. For more information, check the web site at http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM2936.html.
