Brian Halla to Meet with President Bush and Staff to Demonstrate Power-Saving Benefits of Thin Clients

Thin-Client Technology Consumes 80 Percent Less Energy Than PCs

June 27, 2001 - Brian Halla, National Semiconductor Corporation's (NYSE:NSM) Chairman, President and CEO, will meet with President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and their staffs on Thursday, June 28 to discuss energy-saving technologies.

During the session at the U.S. Department of Energy, Halla will demonstrate the power savings of a thin-client computing system compared to a standard personal computer.  Thin clients, which are more reliable and are easier to use and maintain than PCs, are connected to servers which store and process all computer applications and data.

"Thin clients consume about 80 percent less energy than personal computers while providing the same look, feel and benefits of a PC," said Halla. "They are an ideal, energy-saving solution for businesses, governments, schools, hospitals, airports - any enterprise that wants to deploy reliable technology that conserves power."

A desktop PC with a 17-inch CRT display uses approximately 172 watts of electrical power.  However, a thin client connected to a flat-panel display consumes only 25 watts.  Thin-client systems carry an additional power load of five watts for a server.

National's Geode? microprocessor is at the heart of 85 percent of thin clients in use today.  National's partners --including Compaq, IBM and Wyse Technology-- make the finished hardware and thin-client systems deployed throughout numerous enterprises.
