National Semiconductor Introduces Three New 8, 10 and 12-Bit High-Speed, High-Performance A/D Converters Optimized for Communications and Imaging

National is First to Market with the 10-Bit Dual 40MSPS ADC10D040, and also Introduces 12-Bit 40MSPS ADC12040 and 8-Bit 200MSPS ADC08200

June 11, 2001 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced the introduction of three industry-leading low-power, high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs).  With the combination of high speed and low power, these products are ideal for communications and imaging applications.

"National provides the lowest-power high-speed ADCs on the market today," said Robert Eddy, marketing manager for National's data conversion systems product group.  "With unique features added to each of our three new ADC parts, National has improved performance, while maintaining its position with the lowest-power-in-class ADCs in the industry."

National continues to strengthen its 8-, 10- and 12-bit high-speed ADC families with the introduction of the ADC10D040, the industry's first dual channel 10-bit, 40 mega samples per second (MSPS) ADC, as well as the ADC12040 and the ADC08200.

The dual channel ADC10D040 provides single channel performance while maximizing channel isolation.  This device enables economical direct IF-sampling architectures and simplifies the system designs while reducing the number of necessary components.  IF systems today require two ADCs to sample the I and Q channels.  The ADC10D040, with greater than 75dB channel isolation, enables simultaneous sampling of the I and Q channels, and delivers 9.3 effective number of bits.  This high level of performance is achieved at a typical power consumption of only 210mW.  Applications for the ADC10D040 include communications, set-top box and portable ultrasound equipment.

The ADC12040 is a monolithic CMOS analog-to-digital converter capable of converting analog input signals into 12-bit digital words at a minimum of 40MSPS.  This converter uses a differential, pipelined architecture with digital error correction and an on-chip sample-and-hold circuit to minimize die size and power consumption while providing superior dynamic performance at input frequencies well beyond half the sample rate.  Operating on a single 5V power supply, the ADC12040 consumes just 380mW at 40MSPS. The power down feature reduces power consumption to just 50mW.  The ADC12040 is optimized for medical ultrasound equipment.

The ADC08200 is National's latest low-power 8-bit monolithic analog-to-digital converter with an on-chip track and hold.  This product extends its 8-bit family to 230MSPS and is the third product in the portfolio that can scale power to the clock frequency.  This feature is only available through National's unique ADC product line, and enables system designers to optimize the power for their designs based on the clock frequency needed.

The ADC08200 operates at conversion rates up to 230MSPS, delivers 7.1 effective number of bits at Nyquist input frequencies, and typically consumes only 208mW. Applications for the ADC08200 include communications and satellite modems, projection systems, and graphics and video equipment.

National also offers an evaluation board and software that facilitates quick bench trials and simplifies final circuit design.  Using National's WaveVision software running under Microsoft Windows(, designers can capture and display multiple waveform data from the ADC in graphical form from a menu-driven environment.  The software can also perform Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) calculations on the data to measure the dynamic performance of the ADC, displaying Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Signal to Noise and Distortion (SINAD), Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR) in addition to the spectral plot from the FFT.

Pricing and Availability
The ADC10D040CIVS, sampling now, is available in a 48-lead LQFP. The ADC12040CIVY is available in a 32-lead TQFP and priced at $9.00. The ADC08200CIMT is available in a 24-lead TSSOP and priced at $10.50. All prices are in 1000-unit quantities. For more information on the ADC12040 and ADC08200, visit National's World Wide Web site at http://www.national.com/pf/AD/ADC12040.html and http://www.national.com/pf/AD/ADC08200.html
