National Semiconductor Introduces Industry's First Stereo Headphone Amplifier With Digital Up/Down Volume Control in Leadless Leadframe Package

February 5, 2001 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced the LM4811 Boomer? audio amplifier, a 105mW stereo headphone amplifier for use in 3V and 5V systems requiring a headphone output and volume control.  National's LM4811 is excellent for cellular phones, PDAs, MP3, DVD and CD players, Internet appliances and notebook computers.  The LM4811 will be shown at the Wireless Portable Symposium and Exhibition from February 13 - 15, 2001 in National's Booth #809 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California.

"The LM4811 takes efficiency to the next level by offering the convenience of integrated up/down digital volume control in 16 discrete steps with 3dB step increments," said Hector Hernandez, National Semiconductor's audio products marketing manager.  "National listened to customers' needs and responded with the highly customized LM4811, providing customers with a unique product in a very small leadless leadframe package (LLP) which allows 70% board space savings over competitive solutions."

Expanding National's Boomer portfolio, the LM4811 features a push button up/down volume control without the high costs related to a software solution. It sets an amplifier's gain from +12dB to -33dB in 16 discrete steps using a two-wire interface.  Additionally, the LM4811 provides 60dB at 217 Hz Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR), excellent for GSM cellular phone applications.  The LM4811 also includes click and pop circuitry, and delivers 40mW of power at 3.3V into 16 ohms and <1% THD.

Pricing and Availability
The LM4811 is available now in 10-pin LLP and MSOP packaging.  The LM4811 is priced at $0.85 in the LLP package and at $0.75 in the MSOP package, each in 1000-unit quantities.  For more information on the LM4811 amplifier, visit National's World Wide Web site at http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM4811.html.
