January 24, 2001 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced it has elected former Secretary of the Navy Richard J. Danzig to its Board of Directors. Danzig served in two critical posts in the Clinton administration as Secretary of the Navy from November 1998, and prior to that as Under Secretary of the Navy from November 1993 to May 1997. Between these two posts, he served in Asia and Europe as a Traveling Fellow for the Center for International Political Economy and as an Adjunct Professor at Maxwell's School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He also served previously as a member of National Semiconductor's board from 1987 to 1993.
"Richard Danzig is a valuable addition to our Board of Directors," said Brian L. Halla, chairman, president and chief executive officer of National Semiconductor. "In addition to his previous experience in the semiconductor industry, he brings a rich portfolio of international and legal experience and a record of outstanding achievement."
Danzig was born in New York City in 1944 and received a B.A. degree from Reed College, a J.D. degree from Yale Law School, and Bachelor of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Upon graduation from Yale, he served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron White.
Between 1972 and 1977, Danzig served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, first as a Deputy Assistant Secretary, and then as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower, Reserve Affairs and Logistics. In 1981 he was awarded the Defense Department's Distinguished Public Service Award. From 1981 to 1993, Danzig was a partner in the law firm of Latham & Watkins in Washington, DC. In addition to his previous service as a director of National Semiconductor, he also co-authored a book on National Service, taught contracts at Georgetown Law School, was a Trustee of Reed College, and served as litigation director and vice chair of the International Human Rights Group. In 1991 he was awarded that organization's Tony Friedrich Memorial Award as pro-bono human rights lawyer of the year.
