National Announces Full-Function 500mA LDO Voltage Regulator in LLP (Leadless Leadframe Package) For Low-Noise Voltage Conversion in Small Profile PC and Portable Products

January 24, 2001 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today introduced a full-featured 500mA low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator for medium-level current applications in PC and portable products requiring low-noise voltage conversion. The precise micropower LP2989, housed in a chip-scale, leadless leadframe power package (LLP), is designed to fit the tight space requirements of compact portable designs. The LLP package measures just 4.0 by 4.0 millimeters, has a low profile of 0.8 millimeters, and a pin pitch of just 0.8 mm. Power dissipation, measured by theta j-a, is a low 78?C/W. Typical applications for the LP2989 include DSPs, graphics cards, PC and cell-phone audio sub-systems, low-voltage memories, bus terminators, and more.

"The high-performance LP2989, coupled with the LLP package design, gives system designers a versatile, low-cost, small form factor LDO voltage regulator with a full feature set for a wide variety of applications. For example, the new device can efficiently power cell-phone speaker drive electronics, PC audio or network interface cards," said William Weiss, Product Marketing Manager.

"With low-voltage conversions from 3.3V to 2.5V or from 2.5V to 1.8V, system engineers can easily implement the latest low-voltage circuitry in their designs without having to reconfigure their power-supplies," Weiss added. "The LP2989 is an important complement to National's leading portfolio of micropower LDO voltage regulators."

Besides a guaranteed 500mA continuous output current, the feature set for the fixed-output LP2989 begins with an ultra-low dropout voltage of 310mV at a 500mA load and 150mV at a 200mA load (typical).

Output noise is a low 18microV. Ground pin current is typically 1mA at 200mA loads and 3mA at 500mA loads, respectively. For users wanting to manage power dynamically in the system, the device contains logic-controlled on/off. Quiescent current drops to less than one microA in shutdown mode.

Voltage options range from 1.5V to 5V. The precise output voltage is +/-1.5% at room temperature over load and line variations.

The LP2989 includes an error flag that goes low when the output drops 5% below nominal. As with all National Semiconductor LDO regulators with error flags, the LP2989 can be used in wake-on-LAN applications. It also contains protection for over-temperature and over-current conditions. The device has low output capacitor requirements of 4.7microF, low ESR.

Pricing and Availability
Available now, the LP2989 is priced between US$0.91 and US$.99 each, depending on configuration, in 1000-unit quantities. In addition to the LLP Leadless Leadframe Package, the device is housed in eight-lead SOIC or mini-SOIC surface mount packages. The LP2989 is made on National's optimized VIP (Vertically Integrated PNP) process.  For more information on the LP2989, visit National's World Wide Web site at Description.
