National Semiconductor Optimizes 2.5V Dual Operational Amplifier Plus Reference for Lithium-Ion Battery Charging Applications

Space-Saving IC Prolongs Battery Life in Low-Cost Power Supplies and Cell Phone Battery Chargers

November 7, 2000 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced availability of a dual op amp and a 2.5V voltage reference integrated into a single 8-pin SOIC package. The LM432 is ideally suited for cell phone chargers requiring protective isolation barriers. As a secondary side driver for an opto isolator transmitting error signals across the isolation boundary, the LM432 is targeted for low cost chargers for Lithium-Ion batteries. Other potential applications include reduction of common mode noise in power supplies and closed loop control systems such as automatic gain control (AGC).

"In these types of applications, the critical element is cost," noted Kathy Barton, National's marketing manager for worldwide distribution. "Customers are looking for an integrated solution at the same or lower price than individual components. The LM432, with an integrated reference and dual op amps, is just 1/4 the price of competitive designs."

With a typical offset voltage (Vos) of 0.6 mV, the LM432 is particularly well suited for handling current detection signals. Input bias current is a low 3nA, supply current is just 150microamps, and common mode input voltage range that includes ground is 0V to VS-1V. The integrated reference is a shunt regulator adjusted to a fixed output voltage of 2.5V. Functionally, it lends itself to applications requiring zener diode type performance at low voltages. The reference is typically stable with capacitive loads greater than 10nF and less than 50pF.

Price and Availability
Available now in production quantities, the LM432MO8A (SOIC package) is priced at $.33 each in 1000-unit quantities. For more information on the LM432, visit our World Wide Web site at www.national.com/pf/LM/LM432.html.
