NATIONAL SEMICONDCUTOR NAMES DENNIS MONTICELLI TO THE POSITION OF NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR FELLOW

October 19, 2000 - National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) has named Dennis Monticelli to the position of National Semiconductor Fellow, the company's highest technical position. Previously vice president of the Power Management Division, Dennis now serves as Chief Technologist in the Analog Products Group.

Dennis generated several major technical innovations at National that have resulted in sustained business opportunities that continue to significantly benefit the top and bottom line. He holds 20 patents in integrated circuit design, three of which have "medalled" in National's Patent of the Year awards. He pioneered the now ubiquitous Low Drop Out (LDO) voltage regulators that helped enable a whole new class of electronic devices such as cell phones. He created another new segment of voltage regulators with the popular Simple Switcher? product family, a complete switching regulator on a single chip supported by unique design-in software.

Dennis was also the first to apply Complementary Metal Oxide Silicon (CMOS) technology to high performance operational amplifiers, a market previously dominated by bipolar designs. He introduced the first high-performance CMOS operational amplifiers as well as the first low power, high-speed complementary bipolar operational amplifiers. He has also contributed to the definition of several innovative wafer fabrication processes over his 24-year career with the company.

"Dennis personifies the spirit of innovation that has helped make National Semiconductor a world technology leader in the analog and mixed-signal marketplace," said Brian Halla, CEO, National. "His technical expertise and outstanding management abilities continue to contribute to our success."

The National Semiconductor Fellow is the company's highest technical position. It recognizes individuals who have consistently made outstanding contributions to National and the industry as measured by process and product innovations that have a critical impact on the company's success.

Dennis joined National in 1976. For 16 years he worked on a wide variety of analog and mixed signal development projects, both as a circuit designer and as Design Manager. He was appointed to the newly formed Power Management business unit in 1991. He has authored numerous papers in the professional and trade press. In 1977 he received the Outstanding Paper Award at the IEEE International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). In 1994 he served as Program Chairman for that conference.

Dennis received his BSEE from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1974. He lives in Fremont, California.
