NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST MICRO SMD CELLULAR BOOMER AMPLIFIER

LM4890 Ideal for Demanding Applications in Mobile Phones and Other Portable Communication Devices

September 12, 2000 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced the next generation of industry leading Boomer® audio amplifiers for cell phones. The LM4890, features improved Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR), low 2.0V operating capability, improved pop and click suppression, and an ultra-low shutdown current for extended battery life. High PSRR and low shutdown current eliminate the need for additional components, allowing system designers to save space and increase cost-effectiveness. The LM4890 is available in a micro SMD package, which requires 90% less board space than an SOIC.

"In the LM4890, PSRR performance has been improved for cell phone applications by 8dB-10dB over previous solutions, reducing the effect of noise on power supply lines. As a result, noise to the ear piece speaker in the cell phone is substantially reduced. Also, the higher PSRR reduces or eliminates the need for additional components to condition the power supply lines, further reducing board space," said Hector Hernandez, National Semiconductor's audio products marketing manager.

In addition to its excellent PSRR capability, the LM4890 is designed to operate down to 2.6V and still provide 400mW of output power, which is ideal for normal listening, and speaker phone and ringer tone amplification. In addition to cell phone and PDA applications, the next generation Boomer audio amplifiers will also enhance any portable electronic device in need of high performance, cost-effective and space-saving audio power.
