NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR ADDS 8-BIT, 50MHZ ADC TO FAMILY OF HIGH-SPEED, LOW-POWER VIDEO-RATE CONVERTERS

January 25, 1999 - National Semiconductor Corporation? today introduced a low power 8-bit Video ADC (analog-to-digital converter) that typically consumes just 125mW from a single +5V supply. Tested and guaranteed for 50MHz performance, the ADC1175-50 will function with clock frequencies from 1MHz to 55MHz. The combination of low power consumption and excellent DC and AC characteristics makes the ADC1175-50 ideal for use in video and imaging equipment, both standard and portable, including digital still cameras, set top boxes, camcorders, communications, medical imaging, PC video, digital TV and CCD imaging.

"Video and image processing systems offer special challenges and opportunities for the development of A/D conversion solutions," said Bill Stacy, vice president of National's System Products. "The ADC1175-50 is another major step toward making National the single comprehensive source for all data conversion requirements for both generalized video displays and high-end video communication systems," he added.

As the latest IC in National's comprehensive line of video converters, the ADC1175-50 features exceptional dynamic performance with a superior signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 46dB and low harmonic distortion (THD) of -51dB (minimum) at 4.4MHz input. With a low signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SINAD) drop of less than 3dB from fin of 1.3MHz to the Nyquist sampling rate of 24.9MHz, the ADC1175-50 simplifies the design of the analog input signal processing.

National's device uses a unique architecture to achieve exceptional Nyquist performance of 7.2 effective bits (ENOB) with 4.4MHz input and 50MHz clock frequency. Output format is straight binary coding. The ADC1175-50 is resistant to latch-up and includes short-circuit proof outputs. Package options include a 24-pin SOIC or the only TSSOP (thin shrink small outline package) available in this product category. The part is designed to operate from -20C to +75 degrees C.

National offers an evaluation board and software that facilitates quick bench trials and simplifies final circuit design. Using National's WaveVision? software, running under Windows?, designers can capture and display multiple waveform data from the ADC in graphical form from a menu-driven environment. The software can also perform FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) calculations on the data to inspect dynamic performance of the ADC product standalone, or when installed in the user's system.

Price and Availability The ADC1175-50 is available now in an EIAJ SO (ADC1175-50CIJM) and a TSSOP (ADC1175-50CIMTC). Pricing is $3.95 each in 1000-unit quantities.
