NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR ANNOUNCES LOW-COST, TRIPLE-CHANNEL VIDEO DRIVER FOR ENTRY-LEVEL VGA AND XGA MONITORS

September 17, 1998 - National Semiconductor Corporation? today introduced a high-voltage, triple-channel CRT driver for entry-level color monitor applications. The IC supports VGA (640 x 480) and XGA (1024 x 768) displays with pixel clock frequencies up to 70MHz. Pin-to-pin compatibility with other members of National's CRT amplifier family can help shorten time-to-market for monitor OEMs. The LM2409's monolithic design incorporates improved circuit integration, which in turn increases monitor reliability.

"Samsung is a key customer that understands and appreciates the value of superior monolithic drivers in monitor design," said Harry Inia, National's video products strategic marketing manager. "That's why they are including the LM2409 in their newest monitor to achieve reduced part count, lower power dissipation, greater ease of manufacturing, and lower cost, especially when compared to discrete solutions."

The LM2409 operates from 80V and 12V power supplies and features a 40MHz cascode output stage capable of driving 8pf, 40Vp-p swing at a maximum output voltage of 68VDC. At specified frequencies, the IC dissipates 50% less power than its predecessor, the LM2406. Compared to discrete solutions, the power supply can be reduced by 5W. A TO-220, 11-pin package with a heat sink tab minimizes EMI emissions by making it possible to design the LM2409 in a small enclosure.

National's new CRT driver is built on the company's proprietary VIPIIIH™ process, a bipolar process that makes it possible to combine high voltage and high speed on a single chip. For the LM2409, VIPIIIH is used to combine three amplifier channels in a single device while providing the 80V necessary for a CRT driver.

Price and Availability
The 1000-piece price for the LM2409T in the TO-220 package is $1.65 each.
