Siemens Nixdorf to Integrate Cyrix MediaGX™ Processor Into World's Smallest Cash Register
Cyrix Enables Europe's Top Point-of-Sale Manufacturer to Deliver Affordable, Compact, High-Performance Scalable Solution With Best Cost Performance
August 3, 1998 - Cyrix® Corporation, a National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) company today announced that Siemens Nixdorf has incorporated the Cyrix MediaGX™ processor into the design of its Beetle point-of-sale (POS) system, the world's smallest electronic cash register. The fully integrated Cyrix MediaGX™ processor allows Siemens Nixdorf to deliver a low cost, compact scalable solution with the processing power and Windows compatibility of a PC-based POS system.
Siemens Nixdorf's Retail Systems division, Europe's leading manufacturer and distributor of POS systems, supplies complete systems to a wide range of retailers and resellers including self-service retail stores, department stores, mail-order companies, wholesalers and filling stations.
"The modular integration of the Beetle system allows retailers to get a POS terminal specifically for their individual requirements," said Dr. Sommer of Siemens Nixdorf. "The outstanding price/performance of the Cyrix MediaGX™ processor allows us to address more and more complex customer needs while maintaining a competitive price now and in the future."
Siemens Nixdorf will also incorporate several of National's mixed-signal components into its POS devices including a universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) and an ACPI-compliant and Plug-and-Play-compatible Super I/O™ chip.
"Siemens Nixdorf is an innovative leader in point-of-sale technology," said Mike Bereziuk, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Cyrix's parent National Semiconductor. "The selection of the Cyrix MediaGX processor for its "Beetle" system allows them to deliver high performance Windows compatible processing to their customers at a very competitive price. The rapidly expanding market for small form-factor information appliances is requiring increased value and functionality at lower price points. Integrating the MediaGX family allows our customers to respond to those demands."
