National Semiconductor Introduces First 50mA Switched Capacitor Voltage Converters in SOT23-6 TinyPak® Packages

January 5, 1998 - - National Semiconductor Corporation® today expanded its family of switched capacitor voltage converters with the introduction of a pair of 50mA devices, the first to be housed in SOT23-6 TinyPak packages. The LM2664 inverts a positive voltage (+1.8V to +5.5V) to the corresponding negative voltage (-1.8V to -5.5V), while the LM2665 serves as a voltage doubler for supply voltages from 2.5V to 5.5V. Thanks to their small size and high efficiency, both new ICs are ideal for use in a variety of handheld battery-operated equipment.

“The size and performance advantages of these devices reaffirm National’s commitment to supply leading-edge voltage converters for today’s new portable computing and communications products,” noted Venkatesh Shan, National's power management marketing director. “Both parts deliver performance superior to any competitive switched capacitor converters currently available in the market.”

The LM2664 and LM2665 convert a range of supply voltages at a typical efficiency of greater than 90%. Since they operate at 160kHz, the devices require smaller capacitors than other devices that operate at slower speeds. This reduces overall solution size. Moreover, since they require no external inductor, switched capacitor converters eliminate EMI issues related to inductor-based converters. Voltage droop is limited to 0.60V at 50mA, thanks to a low output impedance of just 12 ohms.

The LM2664 and LM2665 switched capacitor converters include a low-current shutdown mode. With typical shutdown current of less than one microamp, the devices are ideal for battery-powered systems. These parts extend National’s existing family of LM2660/1 and LM2662/3 switched capacitor converters, which are 100mA and 200mA devices in MSOP-8 and SO-8 packages respectively.

Price and Availability
The LM2664M6 and LM2665M6 (SOT23-6 package) are priced at $.85 each in 1000-piece quantities.
