National Adds 12V and Adjustable Voltage Versions to Award-Winning Integrated
Power Supply (IPS) Line; Extends Temperature Ratings to Industrial Range
Single System in an IC Package Offers Designers a Smaller, Lower-Cost
Alternative to
Power Modules
September 18, 1997 -- National Semiconductor
Corporation® today announced additional output voltage ratings and an extended
temperature range for its line of award-winning LM2825 integrated power
supplies (IPS). The latest versions of the industry's first fully integrated
DC/DC power converter in an IC package include the LM2825-12 with 12V out; the
LM2825-Adj for output voltages from 1.23 to 8V; and the LM2825H-Adj for output
voltage of 7V to 15V. All IPS devices offered by National are now rated in the
industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C and can drive output loads up to
1A. The new offerings expand National 's previously announced IPS line of 3.3V
and 5V devices for step-down (buck) conversion.
"The IPS is a simpler, lower cost, and more reliable alternative to
power modules or hybrid devices, " said Barry Signoretti, National's analog
product marketing manager. "Systems designers, especially, will appreciate the
minimal design efforts required for DC/DC conversion when they use this part, "
he added.
By encapsulating five external components -- a diode, inductor,
resistor and two capacitors -- plus a switching regulator into a single 24-pin
dual-in-line package, the LM2825 Integrated Power Supply offers the design
simplicity of a DC/DC module in an IC footprint. Mean-Time-Between-Failure
(MTBF) is rated at 20 million hours, a level far greater than modules and
comparable to that of an integrated circuit. Moreover, with the IC leadframe
and molding compound technology, the LM2825's industry-standard package offers
the added manufacturing advantage of automatic PCB assembly, eliminating the
costly, time-consuming practice of manual assembly necessary with DC/DC modules.
Price and Availability
Currently available from National Semiconductor, the LM2825N is offered
in a 24-pin dual-in-line (DIP) package. In quantities of 1000, the device is
priced at $8.05. For more information on the LM2825N, please visit our World
