New Vertical Deflection Output Amplifier Completes National Semiconductor's CRT-Deflection Package

July 28, 1997 -- National Semiconductor Corporation® today announced availability of the LMV8172, a vertical deflection output amplifier for cathode ray tubes (CRTs). With differential voltage input and single-ended output, the device is designed to complement the company's LM1290/96 and LM1292/95 CRT deflection chip sets, which allow the use of separate horizontal time base and geometric correction.

The LMV8172 amplifies a sawtooth waveform to drive the vertical deflection yoke of a CRT. The LMV8172 is designed to minimize power dissipation during forward scanning. In addition, an integrated flyback generator speeds up vertical retrace time.

"This topology has been widely adopted for use in both CRT monitors and TVs" observed H.K. Chiu, National senior technical marketing engineer. "It's easily the most reliable low-cost solution to vertical deflection output IC design, and fully compatible with the vast majority of CRT deflection designs currently in use" he added. The chip set features a peak flyback pulse voltage rating of 60V and a high sawtooth current of 3.2A p-p maximum.

The LMV8172T is offered in a 7-pin TO-220 package. In 1000-unit lots, the part is priced at $0.75.
