NATIONAL'S NEW MONOLITHIC TRIPLE CRT AMPLIFIER
DRIVES CAD MONITORS WITH 60HZ REFRESH RATE
September 24, 1996 - National Semiconductor Corporation® today introduced a triple channel CRT driver with 7nsec rise and 5.5nsec fall time typically required for mid-range monitors with horizontal scan frequencies up to 64KHz. The new generation driver, a product of National's signal-shaping technologies, is specifically designed for SVGA (800x600) and XGA (1024x768) color monitors with 75Hz refresh rates, and is the first monolithic device to drive CAD (1280x1024) monitors with 60Hz refresh rate.
"Solutions using monolithic drivers give designers an excellent alternative to costly hybrid and discrete-based systems," said H. K. Chiu, National's Senior Technical Marketing Engineer. "Indirect savings from lower parts count, reduced inventory, shorter design cycles, simplified manufacturing and superior reliability add up quickly."
National's newest device, called the LM2405T, is capable of supporting scan frequencies up to 64KHz. When used with National's LM1282 video pre-amp, the LM2405T provides a complete video channel solution for SVGA, XGA, and CAD monitors for most applications.
The LM2405T can drive a cathode capacitance of 8pF with a voltage swing of 50Vp-p. Its monolithic design incorporates improved circuit integration, which in turn increases monitor reliability. The LM2405T operates from an 80 and 12V power supply.
The LM2405T is available in a TO-220, 11-pin package with a tab for attaching to a heat sink. The TO-220 package makes it possible to design in a smaller enclosure, thus minimizing EMI emissions.
National's new CRT driver is built on the company's new proprietary VIPIIIH process, a new bipolar process that makes it possible to combine high voltage and high speed on a single chip. Previous versions of this process, used extensively to manufacture high-speed op-amps, produced silicon capable of handling up to 30V maximum. VIPIIIH is a high voltage version that can combine three amplifier channels in a single device while providing the 80V necessary for a CRT driver such as the LM2405T.
Price & Availability
Currently available, the LM2405T is priced at $3.50 each when purchased in quantities of 1000.
