NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR ANNOUNCES 12-BIT, 41MSPS A/D CONVERTER THAT LOWERS COST, REDUCES SPACE IN WIRELESS BASESTATION DESIGNS
August 13, 1996 -- National Semiconductor Corporation® today announced the Comlinear CLC952, a low-cost, high-performance analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with 12-bit resolution and 41MSPS conversion rate. A monolithic device, the CLC952 is optimized for wireless basestation designs used in cellular, personal communications systems (PCS), paging systems and WANs. It offers a 40 percent reduction in cost and a 45% reduction in space over equivalent ADCs now on the market.

"Basestation operators are gradually replacing their analog systems with digital; however, designers of the new digital equipment have few choices when it comes to the critical ADC component," said Kurt Rentel, Marketing Director for National Semiconductor's Comlinear Products. "Until now, the only high-performance device on the market cost nearly $60 each in quantity. The other option was a $35 part that falls short in a number of critical performance areas. The new CLC952, with high-end performance and low pricing, gives designers the best of both worlds."

With 72dB Spurious-Free Dynamic Range (SFDR) and 63dBFS Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the 12-bit, 41MSPS CLC952 essentially matches the performance level of the market's only other high-performance option. At the same time, it offers a superior power-supply rejection ratio (>60dB vs 30dB), a smaller footprint (28-pin SSOP vs 28-pin SOIC), a higher T/H input bandwidth (250MHz vs 100MHz) and a 40 percent lower price.

The Comlinear CLC952 A/D converter is a complete data-conversion system on a chip. The monolithic design includes a wideband track-and-hold amplifier, a bandgap voltage reference and a proprietary 12-bit multi-stage quantizer. It operates from a standard ( 5V power supply.

Price and Availability:
The Comlinear CLC952 A/D converter is $34 in 1000s and is available now.
Packaging: CLC952ACMSA 28-pin SSOP
