NATIONAL RELEASES FAMILY OF 15MOHM N-CHANNEL AND P-CHANNEL MOSFETS IN SURFACE-MOUNT SOT223 PACKAGE

June 3, 1996 - National Semiconductor today introduced a family of N-Channel and P-Channel MOSFETs in a true surface mount SOT223 package. The new series of power SOT MOSFETs offers a low RDS(on) of 15 milliohms, allowing a continuous output current capability up to 11.5A. Although thinner than the popular DPaks, the devices fit in DPak footprints and offer superior performance for space-critical power management applications such as power supplies for notebook PCs and motor drives for HDDs.

"The thinner and smaller true surface-mount SOT223 package design can significantly increase manufacturing throughput,"noted Eric Kuo, National's marketing director. "Moreover, it outperforms the popular DPaks in on-resistance, and offers at least 50% more power dissipation than a larger SO-8 package, thanks to the optimized power package with a highly conductive copper leadframe,"he added.

Through a DMOS process that combines high-cell density silicon and superior package design, National's power SOT MOSFETs achieve the lowest RDS(on) ratings of any SOT223 product family in the industry. This allows the family to provide a level of performance previously available only in larger packages. SOT223 MOSFETs are ideal for use in notebook computers, disk drive applications, and other battery powered, portable devices where battery life and board space are critical.

Currently available from National Semiconductor, pricing in 10,000-unit lots begins at $0.38.
