SANTA CLARA, CA., October 16, 1995 - A single-channel operational amplifier
offering the industry's lowest voltage micropower rail-to-rail I/O performance has been
announced by National Semiconductor Corporation. National's new device, called
LMC7111, combines guaranteed 2.7V, 3V, 5V and 10V performance with a space-saving
micropower TinyPak(tm) SOT-23 housing, making it ideal for battery-powered systems
such as mobile communications, laptop PCs and portable and handheld instrumentation.
"Unlike some single-channel products currently available, this amplifier requires no off-
chip components to program the supply current and improve voltage offset," noted Sonia
Ramirez, National's amplifier product marketing engineer. "It's rare to find an operational
amplifier like the LMC7111 with rail-to-rail performance where it counts most - in low-
voltage applications.
"National's packaging offers another clear advantage," added Ramirez. "TinyPaks are 28%
the size of conventional SO-8 packages. This additional room makes a huge placement
difference, allowing designers to put the IC where it's needed instead of routing signals to a
dual or quad device. TinyPaks can even fit within TO5 cans without being in bare die
form."
The LMC7111's wide rail-to-rail input/output swing from a single supply voltage is
especially desirable for remote sensing and battery monitoring applications that require
maximum signal-to-noise S/N ratio and dynamic signal range. The LMC7111 swings
beyond rails at input and within 20mV of output rails at 100Kohms.
Voltage gain for the device is rated at 104dB sinking (typical), which minimizes the
number of devices that must be cascaded in applications such as filtering. A low input
current of 20pA overtemp and low offset voltage optimize 3V performance, particularly in
high-source impedance applications.
