SANTA CLARA, CA -- September 11, 1995 -- National Semiconductor today expanded its Simple Switcher(reg) power converter family with the introduction of two new 5A flyback power converters that deliver high power in a small form factor. Called the LM2587 and LM2588, the ICs retain the original Simple Switcher power converter family's ease-of-use concept for DC/DC converter applications including guaranteed system performance and design software support.

Both new offerings from National feature increased power (5A switch current versus 3A) over previous Simple Switcher power converters, and 65V switch voltage rating. New, higher-frequency operation allows the designer to specify smaller external magnetic components and capacitors, shrinking printed circuit board area. The LM2587 operates at 100 kHz while the LM2588 allows frequency adjustment between 100 kHz and 200 kHz with one external resistor.

Other advantages offered exclusively on the LM2588 include:

  • Synchronization of multiple devices to a common frequency for easy EMI filtering.
  • This new feature also allows multiple devices to be connected in parallel for higher output current.
  • An on-off pin for external turn-off, reducing quiescent current to 60 microAmps.
Both National devices are designed for flyback, forward and step-up (boost) switching converter applications, and are available in 3.3V, 5V, 12V and adjustable output voltage versions. Both also offer current-mode operation for improved transient response, line regulation and current limit. Protecting the power switch are current and thermal limiting circuits and an undervoltage lockout circuit for fail-safe operation. A soft start feature reduces in-rush current during start-up.

The new flyback power converters are supported by "Switchers made Simple"® version 4.0 design software, which provides designers with a complete design solution including schematics, component lists and vendor information. The design solution selects standard off-the-shelf components readily available through several vendors.

Standard inductors or transformers required for the design are available from National's magnetics partners. National guarantees system performance for DC/DC converter applications designed using the components listed in either the company's design software or data sheets.
