Santa Clara, CA., July 20, 1995 - Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio, president and chief executive
officer of National Semiconductor, today was elected Chairman of the company's Board of
Directors. He replaces former chairman Peter J. Sprague, who retired from the Board on
May 17, 1995 after 30 years of service.
Dr. Amelio has been National's chief executive officer since May 27, 1991. He led the
company through a financial turnaround that has resulted in record earnings for the past
two years. He is also responsible for repositioning National from a broad-line chip-maker
into a company focused on analog and mixed-signal processes for the moving and shaping
market segments.
A graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. in
physics, Dr. Amelio is an IEEE Fellow and holder of 16 patents. He is co-inventor of the
industry's first charge-coupled device, which is used in most video cameras produced
today.
Prior to joining National Semiconductor, Dr. Amelio was president of Rockwell
Communications Systems. He is a member of the board of directors for Apple Computer,
Inc., Chiron Corporation and the National Association of Manufacturer, the Semiconductor
Industry Association and on the board of governors of the Electronics Industry
Association. He is also a member of the Business-Higher Education Forum and the
Wingspread Group on Higher Education.
