Santa Clara, Calif., June 19, 1995 -- National Semiconductor Corporation today announced
a new organizational structure which includes changes to the senior executive staff. The
new organizational structure represents a continued move towards decentralizing the
company, a process which began four years ago under the direction of Gilbert F. Amelio,
president and chief executive officer (CEO).
Announced today was the promotion of Richard M. Beyer, formally president of the
Communications and Computing Group at National, to the Office of the President as
executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO). Beyer will be joining Gilbert
F. Amelio, president and CEO and Kirk P. Pond, executive vice president and COO in the
expanded Office of the President. Beyer and Pond will support Amelio in managing the
company's seven product divisions. "The appointment of Beyer brings a valuable set of
marketing skills and expertise necessary in directing the company toward achieving
sustained growth," said Amelio.
Amelio will continue to maintain direct responsibility for Corporate Administration under
George M. Scalise, executive vice president and chief administrative officer; Finance under
Donald Macleod, executive vice president and chief financial officer; the International
Business Group, Patrick Brockett, president; and the Corporate Technology Group under
Charlie Carinalli, senior vice president and chief technical officer.
In addition, the company also announced today the elimination of the two group structures
formally known as the Standard Products Group and the Communications and Computing
Group. The existing seven product divisions now report directly to the Office of the
President. This decentralized structure greatly elevates the responsibility and autonomy of
the divisional general managers, allowing them to develop the flexibility and business
agility essential in meeting the demands of their customers and marketplace. The seven
product divisions reporting to the Office of the President are the Embedded Technologies
Division, Personal Systems Division, Data Management Division, Local Area Networks
Division, Wide Area Networks Division, Mixed Signal Systems Division and the Analog
Products Division.
The corporation also announced today that R. Thomas Odell has assumed a new role as
senior vice president of Business Process Improvement. In this new executive staff
position, Odell has the critical responsibility of ensuring that the company is instituting the
business processes needed to achieve its growth goals. Odell reports directly to the Office
of the President.
Other corporate organizations reporting to the Office of the President include Quality and
Reliability, Strategic Planning and Market Development, and Asia-Pacific Operations.
