National's South Portland, Maine, die fab manufacturing facility gives the company Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) expertise on 200 mm wafers. CMOS technology is ideal for chips requiring low power, such as those used in cell phones. Our newest fabrication facility focuses on design, advanced process wafer fab manufacturing, and wafer testing. The facility is also home to a Design Center for Custom Solutions.
The site's commitment to the community has been consistent since the fab opened in 1997. The fab is one of South Portland’s largest employers, and consistently receives environmental, health, and safety commendations from local, state, and federal governments.

One hundred percent of National's products are available in Pb-Free (Lead Free) versions.
The South Portland site received the Liberty Mutual Award for Safety.
The site signed a Step Up Program agreement with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which follows the DEP's recognition of South Portland as a key environmental partner for continued improvements through ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification.

| Community Involvement |
|
Since 1998, South Portland has invested more than $2 million in community outreach efforts – including 35 cash grants to Maine teachers using the Internet in their classrooms, extensive technology training for teachers, and a $150,000 grant to the University of Southern Maine for a new advanced manufacturing center. Most recently, South Portland has sponsored a $15,000 grant to the Maine Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness; monies that will go towards a statewide pedometer and exercise program.
Employees live in 75 different Maine towns, and routinely give time and financial resources to those communities.
The site holds an annual "Dare to Care" Fair, where the company hosts more than 20 local non-profit agencies, as well as participating in Red Cross Blood Drives and the Salvation Army’s Christmas Adopt-a-Family program.

In January 2004, a $58 million expansion of the South Portland facility was undertaken to meet surging demand for analog products.
Construction on the current facility was completed in 1997 in just 18 months. Throughout the winter, construction continued under an innovative 11-story air-heated polyester dome.
As a Class 1 fab, there is only 1 particle of dust per cubic foot of air, which is 10,000 times cleaner than a hospital operating room!
The site, located only two miles from the Portland Jetport, encompasses 49 acres with 80,000 square feet of manufacturing space -- equivalent to about 18 soccer fields.

CMOS fabrication includes 0.35, 0.25, and 0.18 micron line widths -- smaller line widths mean transistors take up less space.
