National Semiconductor is partnering with Microsoft to create the chip set technology for an entirely new class of intelligent, personalized, easy-to-use connected consumer devices. Microsoft’s Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) Initiative is designed to provide consumers customizable information on a host of smart personal objects they use every day. National supplies a complete solution made up of seven chips. The heart of the National solution is a two-chip chipset based on an industry-standard ARM-7 baseband microcontroller with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) accelerators plus a custom-designed FM radio chip. National also created a custom-designed power management solution using four power management chips and one power amplifier. All seven chips are contained on a system board that measures only 34 mm by 30 mm by 2 mm-about the size of a quarter.
