Hello, everyone, and welcome to this edition of our video Newsletter… I’m your host, David Baba.
You face a number of challenges in designing power supplies, such as choosing the right inductor, selecting the switching frequency, optimizing the PCB layout, and placing the inductor and other passives... in addition to concerns about noise and electromagnetic interference, or EMI.
And in many cases, you may not have the power supply expertise on your team to devote to your design.
Well now, National Semiconductor is making your job easier, with a whole new series of products in their best-selling SIMPLE SWITCHER® family.
They are the SIMPLE SWITCHER Power Modules, all-in-one power solutions with superior EMI and thermal performance, in an innovative, easy-to-use package.
The SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules integrate a shielded inductor with synchronous buck topology all inside one module... offering you a lower component count, taking less of your time to design, and giving you a faster time-to-market for your systems.
For even greater flexibility, all modules within the same family have an identical footprint and provide pin-to-pin compatibility for different load currents. You only need one layout design for any of three current options.
The SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules have outstanding electrical characteristics, including low radiated EMI, as well as low output voltage ripple … making them ideal for noise-sensitive applications.
To ease the design in process for noise-sensitive applications, all of the modules comply with the EN55022 (CISPR22) Class B radiated EMI standard.
The SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules give you a great advantage in thermal performance, as well… your power supply can operate in higher ambient temperatures with no airflow or fan required.
With low thermal resistance and low system heat generation, the SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules give you a reliable and robust solution.
Let me show you how well the thermal performance is… here on the bench we have a thermal imaging setup comparing the LMZ10504 against a competitor module solution for a 5 Volt input to 2.5 Volt output at 3 Amps.
You can see here from the thermal image of both devices that the LMZ10504 is operating about 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the competitor’s solution.
These two devices have similar efficiencies but you can see how much better the National Semiconductor package is at getting the heat out.
This is a result of the superior thermal design of the package.
To make your design process even easier, SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules are fully enabled for use with National Semiconductor’s WEBENCH® online design tool.
Using WEBENCH you can create complete BOM lists, customized datasheets, Gerber files, and get information on evaluation boards… as well as run thermal and electrical simulations, and generate performance graphs.
And now, National Semiconductor is adding the Power Architect feature to the WEBENCH design environment, allowing you to rapidly create power supplies for an entire system for any number of outputs.
The new SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules are included in the Power Architect tool, giving you a simple solution when you need a low part count in a small footprint, while taking advantage of industry-leading thermal performance.
Overall, it is the fastest way to create multiple, high-performance power supplies for your system design.
So, there you have it… with this new suite of products and tools, National Semiconductor is helping to make your design process easier for any application with demanding power supply requirements.
