SIMPLE SWITCHER® Power Modules Overview

Easy-to-use SIMPLE SWITCHER® power modules feature a new innovative package and deliver best-in-class EMI and thermal performance. The power modules provide high efficiency over a wide input voltage and load current range and are pin-to-pin compatible for different load currents.

The LMZ-series power modules integrate a shielded inductor with synchronous DC-DC step-down topology in an easy-to-use package. They deliver the efficiency of a synchronous switching regulator with the simplicity of a linear regulator, eliminating the external inductor and layout placement challenges typical of switching regulator designs.

In addition, the new SIMPLE SWITCHER EXT (extended temperature) power modules deliver all of the same functionality as the power modules and are guaranteed down to -55˚ C and shock and vibration tested to meet military and industrial standards.

Industry-Leading Integrated Package
Designed for maximum ease-of-use, the patent-pending packaging technology includes a single exposed copper bottom pad with standard IC leads for superior layout and thermal performance. The single exposed bottom makes prototyping easy in applications labs, while the convenient size and lead pitch allow for the same pick-and-place manufacturing as the standard TO-263 package.

Low EMI
Ideal for noise-sensitive applications, the SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules feature an optimized internal layout with an integrated shielded inductor and an input filtering capacitor to reduce noise and EMI. The pin-out of the power module allows input and output capacitors to be placed as close as physically possible to the package, reducing the area of the high di/dt current paths.

  Best-in-Class Thermal Performance

Excellent thermal performance with no airflow requirement, combined with low operating temperature and low system heat generation, make the SIMPLE SWITCHER power modules a reliable and robust solution. Plus, the single exposed bottom coupled with efficient heat dissipation technology eliminates the need for external heat sinks or fans while guaranteeing operation at ambient temperatures from -40˚C to 85˚C (extended -55˚ C ambient temperature versions also available) reducing design complexity and cost.

SIMPLE SWITCHER EXT power modules provide excellent performance in the most extreme conditions, with extended ambient temperatures guaranteed down to -55˚ C and shock and vibration testing that meets military and industrial standards.

Packaged in a completely enclosed plastic molding, the EXT power modules feature leads and a single exposed metal bottom ideal for harsh environments.

Evaluation Boards

The SIMPLE SWITCHER power module demonstration board is optimized for minimized board area and ease-of-use. By utilizing an integrated shielded inductor, an all ceramic capacitor design, and a minimum of external passive components placed on both sides of the PCB, the power module DEMO board shows the ultimate in high power density power supply design. The power modules also offer tremendous ease-of-use in terms of board layout requirements, only requiring a 2-layer 1oz copper PCB to complete the entire design.

The SIMPLE SWITCHER power module evaluation board is optimized for peak performance and increased flexibility. By incorporating additional ceramic and an aluminum filter capacitor, the power module EVAL board demonstrates the low output ripple, fast transient response, and low radiated EMI of the device. Adjusting the output voltage, optimizing the control loop circuitry, and fine-tuning the filter capacitance is easy, with larger-sized passive components placed on the top side of the board. Finally, the excellent thermal performance of the power modules is enhanced using a 4-layer 1oz copper PCB.
