Maine Students Benefit from National Semiconductor Science in Action Grant
Thanks to a grant from National Semiconductor's Science in Action Awards, a popular outdoor learning program in coastal Maine was able to support an exciting new science project this fall. Chewonki's Outdoor Classroom Program, which serves several thousand elementary and middle school students each year with outdoor educational and team building programs, extended its season this year to provide two final programs for public schools from the midcoast region.
One of those programs was for 61 middle-school students from Wiscasset, Maine, designed by two teachers and funded by a Science in Action grant from National Semiconductor. The students participated in a unique pond study lesson that involves the use of students' laptops and photographic microscopes, known as proscopes.
National Semiconductor's Science in Action Awards allow teachers to win up to $2,000 for individual classrooms and up to $5,000 for groups to purchase resources for hands-on science projects. To learn more about the program and to check out Science in Action Award winners, go to www.nsawards.com.

National hosts tour for local robotic students
Oct. 29, 2006 - National Semiconductor's South Portland, Maine site opened its doors to the Bonny Eagle High School Robotic Team, B.E.R.T., to help them learn more about science, technology, and semiconductors.
National employee Scott Hopkins led a tour, answering questions about the technologies used in a semiconductor fabrication facility.
The B.E.R.T students participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition. FIRST is an acronym meaning For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
The FIRST Robotics Competition is an exciting, multinational competition whereby professionals and high school students come together as a team to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. The program claims to be a life-changing, career-molding experience for students- and a lot of fun. It provides a hands-on approach to learning about science, engineering and technology.

Brightening the Holidays for Maine Families
Jan 1, 2006 - The National Semiconductor facility in South Portland, Maine has once again partnered with the Salvation Army to bring cheer to the less fortunate over the holiday season.
Employees from National participated in the Salvation Army's Adopt-a-Family program. In addition to purchasing gifts for every member of 15 needy families, the employees also hosted wrapping parties to make sure each gift was perfectly dressed for giving.
As a result, over 50 people experienced happier holidays. In a thank-you note written by one recipient, she noted the importance of National employees' generosity: "Words cannot express how thankful I am for all you have done for my son and me. This was the most amazing Christmas. Thank you so very much!"
By adopting 15 families, the National employees doubled the efforts of their previous year's participation in the program.
