Girls for a Change Celebrate Success

On May 27, 2005 National Semiconductor hosted the Girls for a Change completion ceremony in Santa Clara.

To the sound of applause and cheers from their parents, teachers, friends, and local elected officials, 300 young women were recognized for their community leadership at the Girls for a Change completion ceremony hosted by National Semiconductor.

The girls, members of Girls for a Change Action Teams, have participated in a social-change movement for the past year. With the support of professional women coaches, including National Semiconductor employees, these young women identified problems in their communities that affect them and their peers. The girls then planned, funded, and carried out social-change projects to help address the problems.

Some of the Girl Action Team projects included...

  • Developing and raising funds for a billboard campaign discouraging teenage smoking
  • Meeting with California Governor Schwarzenegger's office to advocate for immigrant rights
  • Presenting gang prevention workshops for sixth-grade students in East Side San Jose
  • Performing a school-wide assembly to help prevent teen suicide
  • Teaching their peers about the struggle of teen parenthood to help break the cycle
  • Creating the "Independent Chica" website, which provides peer-to-peer counseling for young people

All of the girls expressed pride at their accomplishments and now realize that they can make a difference in their communities...and their lives. National Semiconductor supports Girls for a Change through the National Semiconductor Foundation and the involvement of employee volunteers.

Girls for a Change empowers urban middle and high school girls to make social change in their communities.
